On March 21, 2021, the first Hunger Games movie was released in cinemas. Lasting 2
hours and 22 minutes, this action, adventure and sci-fi movie has conquered the audience.
Training the players
Two months before the shoot, all the young actors of Hunger Games had to participate in a
training to transform them, physically and mentally. The program included running, jumping,
climbing, weapons, etc. Jennifer Lawrence was trained in archery by an Olympic archer.
Josh Hutcherson gained seven kilos of muscle for his role as Peeta.
To sum up, the Hunger Games are a televised event where the tributes must compete until
death, the survivor is declared the winner. The film follows the story of Katniss Everdeen,
played by Jennifer Lawrence, a District 12 girl who volunteers for the Games to protect her
sister, Prim. She is accompanied by Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson, a boy from
the same district.
A message of solidarity
This story conveys a message of solidarity. Solidarity is shown as the only way to survive
atrocious situations. The rejection of violence is put forward as a way to fight against
oppression.
Denouncing reality TV
In addition to its social criticism, Hunger Games denounces two aspects of reality TV. It
stages the spectacle of violence with a humiliation of a candidate live on TV and the falsity
of the relations between candidates but also the public.
Breaking down stereotypes
This film goes beyond society's gendered stereotypes. Usually in action films, it's the men
who are strong. Here, the roles are reversed. We find a strong, active heroine, Katniss
Everdeen, taking charge of her family. The heroine is masculine, and her behavior is valued
in the film; societal norms are reversed. The film also features a male lead character, Peeta, whose behavior is based on feminine values, romantic, generous and non-violent. These
behaviors are valued in the film. However, both also have gender-typical qualities: Katniss
cares for others and Peeta is physically strong. Hunger Games goes beyond gender
stereotypes, with a strong woman and a softer man.
A Remarkable Cinematic Adaptation
The Hunger Games film is therefore an excellent, faithful and powerful film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' book.
